Carbon Emission Levels Spark Renewable Energy Development

(Before It's News)

Carbon dioxide has just breached the 400 parts per million (ppm) level in our atmosphere, and this is cause for alarm. Carbon dioxide is, of course, the most notorious of all polluting agents involved in global warming.

As of now, levels over the Arctic exceed 400 ppm, while the worldwide level is just slightly below this at 395. The levels have been rising for years, but the trend has sped up recently.

From the Guardian:

“The news today, that some stations have measured concentrations above 400ppm in the atmosphere, is further evidence that the world’s political leaders – with a few honourable exceptions – are failing catastrophically to address the climate crisis,” former vice president Al Gore, the highest-profile campaigner against global warming, said in an email. “History will not understand or forgive them.”

It’s news like this that reminds us renewable energy is not just a phase. Of course, there are nations subsidizing power sources like solar and wind.

But perhaps this will be a wake-up call that renewable growth isn’t happening quickly or urgently enough.

The U.S. has started to adjust to this necessity. A new solar bond project could help finance $4.6 billion in installations.

And a report in June determined that it is feasible for the U.S. to become 80% renewable by 2050.

But carbon dioxide lingers around in the atmosphere for a very long time (around a hundred years).

According to the data, levels prior to our industrial age were around 275 ppm. The last time carbon dioxide levels broke 400 was more than 800,000 years ago.

The International Energy Agency stated that it looks like we won’t be able to meet the aim to restrict global warming to two degrees, since our emissions levels are rising so quickly.

But solar panel prices are dropping and nations are subsidizing offshore wind farms. If those world political leaders take this news seriously, this sort of devastating emissions growth can be diminished.
