(Before It's News)
May 2, 2013 – 2:00am – 2:30am
Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, Washington, DC
The session will focus on the areas of agreement and disagreement between those that see a need for greater control over some aspects of Internet use, and those who believe in the need for greater openness and access to the Internet's content. Some highlights:
- Justifications offered for greater control: fighting Internet piracy; improving cybersecurity; blocking of child pornography; preventing terrorism and money-laundering; censoring hate speech
- Mechanisms: regulations, censorship and filtering, warrantless wiretapping, taxes, prohibitive access fees, tighter terms of use from ISPs, bandwidth caps, etc.
- Is the “golden age” of the Internet over?
