Serpentine Garden Marathon 2011: RODNEY GRAHAM – Lobbing Potatoes At A Gong (1969/2006)

The Serpentine Gallery Garden Marathon was the sixth in the Gallery’s acclaimed Marathon series. This two-day event explored the concept of the garden.

You should be an artist is the title of the solo exhibition by RODNEY GRAHAM that opened on November 18 at Le Consortium in Dijon. GRAHAM is best known for his self-portraits captured in precise settings and which are playing with the representation of the artist itself.

Initially Lobbing Potatoes at a Gong (1969) (2006) is a film shot on 16mm and presented as a looped projection that fictitiously documents a 1969 performance. The artist, played by RODNEY GRAHAM, is shown sitting on a chair in the setting of an alternative cultural institution, with an audience watching him trying to hit a gong with potatoes. All the potatoes that actually hit the gong were subsequently used to produce vodka in a small still. The bottle was displayed in a showcase, both an end product and part of the work.

It was performed in 2006 as part of a Noise Festival, and MIKE KELLEY, we threw the potatoes at the gong. But yeah, I made that piece as part of the work of a hypothetical artist, based on the drummer from Pink Floyd throwing vegetables, who’d worked with potatoes at a certain point in his career. – RODNEY GRAHAM in conversation with DAN GRAHAM, artinamericamagazine.com, 2010

In 2011 RODNEY GRAHAM reenacted the piece (see video) on the occasion of the Serpentine Garden Marathon. This work is currently part of the exhibition You should be an artist that is running through February 17, 2017 at Le Consortium, Dijon.
