Teams rarely stay together for longer than one year. Team members come and go depending on business requirements and their own career aspirations. With this in mind, how does a leader create and maintain a high performing team?
Look at any high performing team and you will see that they have certain characteristics in common. For example, they are all committed to their team’s purpose. This is not coincidence. It is because the leaders of these high performing teams have kept team members focused on the team purpose.
If you’re a leader who is trying to build a high-performing team, focus your team on the following characteristics:
Team purpose – High performing teams have a clear team purpose and the team leader regularly communicates the purpose to team members to keep them focused on it. With this in mind, it’s important to balance individual needs with the overall team purpose.
Clear goals/objectives – On high performing teams, each team member needs clearly defined goals and objectives. Furthermore, they need to understand how their role supports the overall team purpose and how they contribute to the success of the business.
Clear roles – On high performing teams, roles and responsibilities of each team role are clearly described so everyone knows who does what and who is accountable for what.
Multi-directional communication – High performing teams are good at multi-directional communication. Communication happens at all levels of the team — from leader to team, leader to individual, team to leader and team member to team member.
Trust – High performing teams are built on trust and support where team member trust and support one another. This trust develops as the team works together to achieve goals.
Decision making authority – With high performing teams, team members know when to get approval and have the confidence to make decisions on the fly.
