Often I hear that people are becoming more detached because of technology or otherwise uninvolved with their surroundings as everything around us feels like it’s spinning out of control. But the truth of the matter is there are some individuals who are actually taking back their neighborhoods, often through technology, while dispelling the myth that too much tech is a bad thing. Whether it be person using existing tech like their cell phone to alert police that someone needs help or merely using their smart phone to record a dangerous activity the police needs to be aware of. No matter how you slice it, there are ways all of us can be considered helpful to our perspective communities.

So you wanna be a super hero, eh?

As kids, many of us dreamed of becoming the next Batman, Spiderman or Superman. Halt in the name of justice and all of that. The truth of the matter is that while this is merely fantasy for the bulk of us, there are some people out there who have opted to take this lifestyle quite seriously. Their motivation varies, but the common thread appears to be the idea of stepping into harms way to help out those in need. Other times, it’s just folks who like dressing up and helping people out who might need it.

So how does one become a super hero? Not being one myself, it has been made fairly clear to me that you can do so merely by putting yourself out there to help out those people who might be less fortunate. Maybe volunteering at a shelter or a food bank. Perhaps instead, you’d rather dress up as a super hero and volunteer at the local children’s hospital.

Meet other real life super heroes

This actually happened, in my home state. And yes, there is some technology at work here. But for the most part, this guy known as Phoenix Jones actually has a very plausible story as to how he came about becoming what some have deemed a “super hero.”  Today he’s updated his armor a bit, uses a “net-gun”, bullet proof vest and a Taser nightstick. Perhaps his most effective piece of technology is his phone, in which he is in constant communication with the cops on.

Should you become a super hero?

While there is a growing movement, I think that the best bet for most people is to use the skills that we have and offer them to those who might be able to benefit. Setting up a wifi connection for someone at a coffee shop, fixing a computer for someone recovering from illness for free, there are so many things that could easily land you with the label hero. The super part, is something that is best left to the comic books.
