The line between mobile phones and tablets has started to fade. Someone at Samsung went crazy with the display size on Note and suddenly it became the coolest thing in smartphone market. There are reasons why people love these large screen mobile phones. They are excellent for people who consume a lot of media on their devices. Plus there is a rule with display size, the bigger the better. Well as long as you have a trouser pocket that can fit the device.
While Nokia has been keeping a check on the display sizes for a long time, they couldn’t keep themselves from making a large screen mobile phone now when it has become the trend with every other manufacturer. The Nokia Lumia 1320 came in with its elder brother Lumia 1520 but the similarities are limited to just the display size and battery. Everything else on the Lumia 1320 is half of what you get on Lumia 1520 for half the price. It offers a lot of screen space with an average hardware and a moderate price tag. This makes the device one of a kind and but does a stripped down version of the Nokia Lumia 1520 make sense? We try to find out.
Design
Nokia Lumia 1320 is quite large which is very obvious with a display this big. It measures 164.2 x 85.9 x 9.8 mm and as you can see from the numbers that it isn’t very slim either. The phone has a flat back, which gently curves near the edges. It has a smooth matte finish on the back and sides. This doesn’t help when you are holding the device. The device is very heavy at 220 Gms. To put that in perspective, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, with a 5.7-inch display, weighs 168 Gms.
Just like many other Lumia devices, you can have this one in multiple colours as well. The back cover is removable so even if you get bored of the colour you pick, you can simply get another one and swap it. The back panel is quite simple. The Nokia logo sits vertically in the center with the camera and LED flash above it. There is a speaker grille below the logo, which has two nubs around it to prevent the sound from being muffled when the phone is sitting on its back. The back panel is removable as we already said but you can’t remove the battery. Removing the cover would only allow you to access the micro SIM and micro SD card slot, is that a disappointment for you?
Display
Nokia Lumia 1320 has a semi HD IPS LCD display, which measures 6 inches diagonally. A resolution of 720p looks great on a 4.5 or 4.7 inch display but on a display this size, the pixel density drops to a mere 245 pixels per inch. Therefore, from the numbers, you can infer that the display isn’t very crisp which exactly the case here is. You won’t notice that with graphics but small text might look a little fuzzy.
It is an IPS display so you can’t really expect blacks like you would get on an AMOLED display. The blacks on the Nokia Lumia 1320 aren’t very bad though. They are sort of very dark gray. The colours are well saturated but they are slightly off the perfect mark, something that you won’t notice until you put it against some other display. The viewing angles are good and they would only be limited by the glare of the screen. If you choose to use automatic brightness, it would be easily readable in sunlight as well. Overall, we were happy with the display considering the price of the device.
Software
The software on this device is the latest version of windows phone 8 that is bundled with Nokia’s own bunch of features. They call this version ‘black’. While it is essentially the same in terms of look and feel, some features were missing in the previous versions. In this version, you can turn on the screen rotation lock, which would help you save battery and now you text easily while in bed. You can kill apps easily from the app switcher and use custom notification ringtones easily. The glance screen has improved and it has a night mode as well.
There are many pre-installed applications from Nokia on the device and has a good number of Nokia apps that you can download from the marketplace. You can remove the ones you don’t need. We love the Here Maps for its simple interface and good voice guided navigation. Google maps is detailed but it has got issues with the navigation. Nokia is way better at the job of telling you the way around your city. The windows marketplace has some popular developers now and you won’t miss the major apps. However, you might not find many games here.
Hardware/ Performance
There are multiple versions of the Nokia Lumia 1320 for different markets. There are two LTE models and a 3G only version. The phone runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset with a dual core processor running at a maximum clock speed of 1.7 GHz. The graphics are handled by an Adreno 305 GPU. It has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of onboard storage. You would have to put a memory card for your media because most of the internal storage would be taken up by the apps only.
Nokia Lumia 1320 is faster than the Lumia 1020, which has already proved itself to be a good performer. So we can safely say that you won’t have any performance issues. The Lumia 1320 has a 3400 mAh battery. It can easily take you through a day of heavy usage. They put the same battery in Lumia 1520 but it has a high-resolution display and a very powerful quad core processor, which drains the battery quickly. On the 1320 however, they claim 100 hours of continuous music playback on a single charge.
It has a 5-megapixel camera and it is much better than what the numbers suggest. Nokia has been good with this camera business and this phone is no exception. It won’t dazzle you with the results but it is definitely better than most other 5 megapixel cameras. It can also record videos in full HD, which turn out to be quite decent as well.
Verdict
This large Nokia Lumia 1320 device has got an excellent battery life, a large display and a decent price tag but it fails to stand out. There is nothing very special about the device and the smaller Lumia devices appear to be a better deal. It would fail to appeal to a large number of customers and caters to very specific consumer demands. In addition, it is tough to handle a device this big and one-handed operation is strictly out of the equation. The weight of this device further makes things a little worse. It is just an average device, which would not be able to get much attention. However, if you are looking for a large screen Lumia device with excellent battery device, this one would make a good buy for you.
