(Before It's News)

Green living is as simple as the environmental issues the world faces are complex. Despite knowledge of the risks, toxins continue to seep from factories. Food sources are awash in mercury. Acres of trees are slaughtered daily. It might seem anything we might do would be futile. That would be an unfortunate line of thinking. There are convenient ways to minimize our footprint through daily tasks.

Unplug

Unplug

Homes are filled with DVD players, cable boxes, computers, televisions, microwaves, recharging tablets, cell phones, laptops and more. Hitting the ‘OFF’ button on these devices does not mean what it says. The newest electronics are designed to never turn off. They go into standby mode. They continue to consume energy – and raise bills. In fact, anything with a digital clock is consuming tons of kilowatt hours. We should always unplug anything not in use.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Finding the best ways to minimize waste is a major contribution to going green. Recycling a single aluminum can is the equivalent of saving enough energy to run a television for three hours. You can save hundreds of millions of gallons of water and hundreds of thousands of trees by using one roll of recyclable toilet paper a year. With a little research, you would be amazed what we can all do to prevent overwhelming landfills and keeping our air, waters and land cleaner.

Most electronic devices contain toxic elements that should not sit in landfills. This includes refrigerators, computers and televisions. Find out the safest ways to dispose of them, including organizations that will recycle them. The EPA will show you how to safely dispose of electronics. The EPA is probably the top resource for learning about recycling. You can also call 311 and talk with a local operator in your area.

Shopping

When we purchase local goods, we reduce the need to transport products from other parts of the state, country and world, minimizing the burning of fossil fuels. Also, instead of disposable bags supplied by retailers, use sturdy tote bags or a supply of bags you keep at home. Always have a few in the car or in your bag, just in case. Also, when it comes to seeking appliance and system care in your home always ask for green purposes. Many different places such as Cape Fear Air Conditioning & Heating Co., Inc, have an energy savings agreement. That is definitely something that can make a huge difference. It is well worth looking into.

Overall, if we all kept these guidelines in mind, the world would be well on its way to contributing to a more efficient tomorrow. That is why it is so important to do all that you can to make a difference today. You’d be surprised how much of a difference one person can make.
