(Before It's News)
Even with all of media coverage given to off-shore oil exploration and the catastrophic impacts when things go wrong, the sheer scale of development in areas such as the Gulf of Mexico is often understated. Images of a drilling rigs and platforms scattered throughout the Gulf simply doesn’t do justice to the spider’s web of active wells, drilling rigs, and the pipeline infrastructure that ties them all together.
With that in mind, we pulled together an interactive map of all these elements to help put everything in perspective. We wanted to include abandoned oil and gas wells, but found that doing so would crowd the map so many points that it would be nearly incomprehensible. Please note that the data on the active wells are not
This map was processed last summer by one of our enterprising interns, Yolandita Franklin, with data provided by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). We hope that this will help to put off-shore energy in some perspective, and invite you to look at resources such as the Gulf Oil Spill Tracker to see how often this infrastructure leaks.
