When it comes to your health, there are many vital functions of your body. When you think about it, your whole body needs to operate together to keep you healthy and functioning on a high level. Your blood is no exception. The blood that pumps through your veins supports your body and your life. Blood serves the vital function of carrying waste products, nutrients and oxygen throughout your body.
A Look at Blood:
Most people have probably never given blood a second thought. It is a normal part of all people and you see it only when you bleed. However, your blood is full of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets that support your life. Your blood has a very important job and without a healthy supply you will find yourself very ill. Some people with severe blood disorders may require extensive medical treatment or even blood transfusions.
One of the most important jobs of your blood is to carry oxygen throughout your body. The blood carries it to the lungs, and to the body tissue. It then exchanges the oxygen for the waste products such as carbon dioxide that your body no longer needs. The white blood cells are also crucial. They help protect your body from illnesses, bacteria and viruses. Your blood also contains what are called platelets. These are very important parts of your body function as well. Platelets can help stop bleeding and can also repair blood vessels. If you get a cut, it is the platelets in your blood stream that will clump together to patch it up. Without an ample supply of platelets in your blood stream, you would bleed to death.
A Look at Blood Disorders:
Just like any other part of your body, you can get sick when your blood is not functioning correctly. There are many different types of blood disorders and some are certainly more serious than others. You have probably heard of many of these blood disorders. They range from anemia, to leukemia to hemophilia for starters. When you have problems associated with your blood, then you will have to find medical care to help with the problem.
One of the most common types of blood disorders that you will hear of is anemia. Anemia is caused by an iron deficiency in the blood stream. This reduced iron deficiency may results in problems with hemoglobin production. In fact, anemia, which is most common among women of child bearing age, can cause heavy bleeding, and a deficiency of iron in the body, which can lead to fatigue. Other very common symptoms of anemia include a pale look, dizziness, headaches, bruising, nervousness, depression, heart palpitations and even shortness of breath. Most cases of anemia can be treated by iron supplements taken on a daily basis. Those suffering from anemia can also help their condition by eating a diet rich in protein.
Of course, anemia is not the only blood disorder. There are many others and some are more serious than others. If you suspect you have a blood disorder, you should schedule an exam by your health care professional.
