From George Carlin’s Jammin’ in New York: “About this time, someone is telling you to get on the plane. “Get on the plane. Get on the plane.” I say, “f*ck you, I’m getting IN the plane! IN the plane! Let Evil Knievel get ON the plane! I’ll be in here with you folks in uniform! There seems to be less WIND in here!” Now you can substitute Tom Cruise for Evil Knievel, as seen on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’s first trailer and poster. That is in fact Tom Cruise dangling from an Airbus A400, and not his long time stunt double Tom Crooze.
“I’ve often sat on airplanes, looked out and thought what it would be like out there on the wing. This is the (stuff) I think about,” Cruise told USA Today. “That’s me the whole time. I was standing right over the tires when we landed. It’s nerve-racking for everyone else, but pretty exciting for me.” Director Christopher McQuarrie – who has directed The Way of the Gun and Jack Reacher as well as written The Tourist and Jack the Giant Slayer (okay, there’s a lot of low cards in that hand) – added that “we knew anything we did was going to be compared with the Burj. But it’s not like you could wait for someone to build an even taller building. We keep pushing the envelope.”
Cruise had previously scaled the Burj Khalifa – also known as the tallest man-made structure in the world – in 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. And before that, he free solo climbed in Moab, Utah’s Dead Horse Point State Park for Mission: Impossible II (how many of these movies are there, anyway?) Rogue Nation also stars Simon Pegg – who is supposed to be the Q to Ethan Hunt’s Bond, but my guess is he’s more like the Rob Schneider to Hunt’s Judge Dredd –, Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, and Alec Baldwin. The movie will open July 31st.
