Killing the shortage narrative with hard data

(Before It's News)

After years of frustration with Blogger “touching up” my html code to the point of being unrecognizable, I need a new publishing platform. I’m inclined to believe that WikiMedia is the proper venue, but my income is so spotty, a privately hosted Wiki (invited editors only) is not going to happen without some angel funding ($200 first year — 20 people at $10 ea?)

Here’s some example content we will start with the IT occupations and branch out to STEM.

I believe that the data we need to publish is the annual occupational growth data from BLS-OES compared with the relevant degrees conferred from NFS/NCES ranked colleges. Yes, that raw data is out there, but the supply vs. demand data is not conveniently displayed to display losses or under performance.

Code Title Growth Since 2012
Edu Req
15-1131 Computer Programmers -9,123
Bachelors
15-1132 Software Developers, Applications 53,797
Bachelors
15-1133 Software Developers, Systems Software -317
Bachelors
15-1134 Web Developers 8,043
Assoc. – some college
15-1141 Database Administrators 2,180
Bachelors
15-1142 Network and Computer Systems Administrators 24,160
NA
15-1143 Computer Network Architects 8,710
Bachelors
15-1151 Computer User Support Specialists 59,430
HS / Cert

For the poor kids taking Computer Science in college, there are Systems Developers and Programmers training for the wrong occupation (red), Application Developer are hot right now.

Not requiring a degree at all, Computer User Support Specialists should not be open to H-1B, but MyVisaJobs reports HCL applied for over 500 of them.

Here’s are the relevant degrees conferred (bachelors and above) for Software Developers, Systems Software in 2015, who graduated into a declining (-317) occupation. Yet, thousands of H-1B applied in 2016.

(BTW: Bill Gates (etc) still claims the shortage is because of few Computer Science degrees, there are about three dozen other curriculum offerings for IT now.)
