According to the researching team of National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (belongs to Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), Mt. Fuji can erupt in the next large earthquake.
They described Mt. Fuji as “a balloon ” full of magma and gas. The potential major earthquake can cause diastrophism so the stocked magma and gas may splash from the cracks of the dike inside of the mountain body.
They stated it’s in the same state as just before the last eruption called Houei great eruption in 1707.
In Houei great eruption, M8 level of an earthquake hit in 1703. 4 years later, M 8.6 ~ 8.7 level of another earthquake occurred and Mt. Fuji erupted 49 days later. The second earthquake had two epicenters in Tokai offshore and Kii offshore.
Rumbles in the ground was observed since 1 month after the earthquake, and M4~5 level of the earthquakes happened several times one day before the eruption.
It is recorded the eruption last for 2 weeks, Tokyo (Edo) had the sky covered with volcanic ash to cause the serious shortage of food and respiratory illness. It’s also recorded that Mt. Fuji was in the relatively stable state until the M8.6 ~ 8.7 earthquake. [Wikipedia]
National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology comments Mt. Fuji has been stocking magma for 300 years since Houei great eruption.
