Following up this article.. Over 80% of Tuna died since December in a major Tokyo aquarium [URL]
From autopsy inspection, the dead tunas were found to have broken the spine. The cause is not identified.
Since Fukushima Diary reported about the mass death of tunas on 1/14/2015, 13 more tunas died by 1/17/2015.
Currently only 17 tunas are remaining in the glass tank. They assume all the tunas can die before February.
The aquarium announced no abnormality was found in the quality of water, also they are carefully controlling the circumstances to minimize the stress of the tunas.
An expert from Fisheries Research Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries comments it is not rare that tunas have mass hysteria from stress and die from crashing against each other or the tank. However the aquarium states they haven’t experienced such large number of tunas die rapidly as now.
Because the aquarium doesn’t have a plan to charge new tunas, it is impossible to compare the behavior of new tunas and old ones.
