Diastrophism is ongoing under Lake Biwa, from the research of prof. Kumagai of Ritsumeikan university.
5 years ago Kumagai’s researching group found out the sediment is blown up with bubbles from the lake bottom.
From the follow-up investigation implemented this October, approximately 10 sources of bubble were confirmed about 20m below the surface of the lake.
This place is assumed to have been the slope of a mountain over 400,000 years ago.
Lake Biwa is known to be shrunk from the eastern end and western end. The researching group states the old mountain ground is being pressured from the both sides of east and west to blow out the bubbles.
