On 11/26/2015, Tepco and METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) announced they plan to dismantle the entire roof of Reactor 2 building.
This is to remove the nuclear fuel stocked in the SFP 2 (Spent Fuel Pool of Reactor 2). It is reported that it stores 587 spent fuel assemblies and 28 new fuel assemblies. The pool is located on 5th floor. They plan to remove the entire wall and roof above the floor.
They commented that the construction is going to start in the end of 2016, but the exact date is not announced yet.
Tepco turned down all the other ideas to remove only a part of the roof in order to minimize the radioactive material that can be spread out. They state it is because the estimated construction duration is the shortest.
