After floating in the water for days, a dead whale has washed up dead on the beach of a popular seaside town in Scotland, STV reported.

The large mammal, said to be a minke whale, was spotted on the beach by eyewitnesses at Wemyss Bay in Inverclyde on Friday morning and Clyde Coastguard said it had been floating in the River Clyde for several days.

Kirsteen Clements, a student from North Ayrshire, who saw the whale said: 'It is about six feet long. The tide has been coming over it and it is not moving. It is a very sad sight.'

A Clyde Coastguard spokesman said: 'We can confirm that a whale has washed up on the shore at Wemyss Bay today.

'It is definitely dead and we are not sure of its specific breed so can't confirm that it's definitely a minke whale.

'It has been floating around in the water for a few days now, but was finally washed up onto the shore today. It will be the responsibility of the local council to remove it.'

Minke whales are the second smallest breed of baleen whale and are often found in shoreline waters but prefer the open sea.
