A 12m humpback whale carcass floating near Garden Island since yesterday is expected to be removed later today or tomorrow.

A Department of Defence spokesman said today the carcass would be removed by the Australian Navy, with the assistance of the Department of Environment and Conservation.

"The navy will be removing the carcass under the guidance of the DEC today or tomorrow," the spokesman said.

"It’s rolled up into navy waters so we take responsibility for it."

The Department of Fisheries has been monitoring the area near where the carcass is for any increased shark activity.

A department spokesman said however there had been no increase in shark activity in the area thus far near the whale carcass.

"We are still out there and we will stick there until the whale is gone," the fisheries spokesman said.

"There has been no shark activity at all although it is one of those food sources that (great) whites have been known to be attracted to."
