A search and rescue crew raced to Campbell's Cove Sunday afternoon after receiving a report of an overturned boat.

It turns out the boat was actually a dead blue whale, floating in the water.

The team was dispatched from Souris in a fast rescue craft. They estimated the whale is 9 metres — or 30 feet – long.

The dead whale is about 2.8 kilometres offshore.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans will now determine what to do with the giant carcass.

The blue whale is an endangered species. There is no indication of what caused its death.
