Officials fear dead whale’s teeth to go

ELLIE TURNER

September 8th, 2012

TEETH and bones of a sperm whale carcass on a remote Territory beach may tempt blackmarket businessmen, marine officials fear.

The mammoth beast began to decompose at Shark Bay, Melville Island, after it died on Wednesday.

The whale and its valuable teeth

Marine officer Ray Chatto said he would get his hands on one of the its eight-inch teeth for scientific purposes.

But he said conniving individuals might have cash-grabbing ideas.

“Like other endangered species, (parts of) a whale are quite valuable,” he said.
