China and Taiwan hold negotiating talks concerning straits in Taipei

Taiwanese and Mainland Chinese officials are sitting down together for the eighth dialogue since Taiwan split in 1949. However, many Taiwanese are still Beijing-wary. Preliminary talks between the Beijing-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and the Taiwanese Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) were held on Wednesday afternoon. Two agreements are expected to come out of the meeting, and will be signed on Thursday. One of these agreements is said to provide protection for the several tens of thousands Taiwanese businesses operating in Mainland China. However, more than thirty Taiwanese groups urged the government to hold back on the deal, and first demand the release of a Taiwanese businessman imprisoned in China.
