Chinese officials are hosting an envoy of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, after Westerns powers condemned Beijing for blocking efforts to end to the Syrian conflict. Assad's political and media adviser, Buthaina Shaaban, arrived in China on Tuesday. He is expected to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. Communist authorities also say they are considering meeting with Syria's opposition, and claims it is trying to diffuse deadly violence in the civil war-torn country. They did not specify when this meeting would take place. China and Russia have been heavily criticized after vetoing UN Security Council resolutions that would have imposed sanctions on Syria, to force al-Assad to end the violence. Syrian opposition sources say at least 18000 people have been killed since rebels began fighting to oust al-Assad in March of last year.
