(Before It's News)

The latest Chinese challenge to the iPhone was launched on Thursday in Beijing by Xiaomi Technology. Xiaomi is one of many local companies producing cheap alternative phones to Apple's iPhone. Their latest launch is the MI2, the successor to its popular MI (MiOne) smartphone. The MI2, which goes on sale in October at 1999 yuan, or $310 USD, has a quad-core processor, eight mega-pixel camera and a voice-assistant similar to Apple's Siri, yet sells for less than half the price. [Li Pei, Office Worker]: “Its functions are pretty good, and the price is great for what you get. As for the Apple iPhone, I think that's all about going for the brand. I don't like going for the brand. First of all, Xiaomi is Chinese, and I think everyone should support local-made products. Plus, it's a great product.” Smartphones from Xiaomi have become so popular that they sell out completely just minutes after going on sale online. The company was founded by CEO Lei Jun, who said last month its first-half revenue was close to $1 billion after selling more than three million phones. [Guo Dong, Xiaomi Fan]: “The phone's price is definitely unbeatable. 1999 yuan compared to the cheapest iPhone on the black market, which is 3700 yuan, it has a big advantage in price. And the configuration and the data show that it's definitely very popular, given the situation for most people, because 1999 yuan for students and the recently-employed is not a huge financial pressure.” China's thriving smartphone
