Thanks to a partnership between Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and Google Earth technology, users on Google Maps can now use Street View to see famous Mexican archaeological sites. Google Street View allows users to look at an image from any vantage point with a 360-degree, interactive interface. Among the locations now available: Chichen Itza, Teotihuacan, Monte Albán, and El Tajín. [Miguel Alba, Marketing Director of Google Mexico]: “Today, we can say that we are the first to release such a complete collection of the patrimony of one country. We can see galleries that exist with UNESCO World Heritage sites. We have sites which have been specially designed for impact events such as a World Cup but a collection such as the one we are presenting today of Mexico for the world is one of a few we'll see.” Using tricycles specially-equipped with the street view cameras, Google sent out cyclists to the archaeological sites. [Alfonso de Maria y Campos, Director of INAH]: “It's an innovation by Google that designed a photography system that is not invasive and adapts to circumstances. I think this speaks to their creativity which we hope to have. We worked with them and we accompanied them so that it would be done in the correct way accomplishing the objective with the least amount of damage for the site.” 90 sites are expected to be included eventually.
