Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Technology launched the successor to its popular MiOne (MI) smartphone in Beijing on Thursday, in the latest local challenge to the iPhone. Xiaomi is part of a host of little-known local firms producing cheap phones to squeeze market share from US giant Apple in China. The booming smartphone market in China is set this year to overtake the United States as the world's largest. The MI2 has specifications that exceed those of the iPhone 4S and sells for less than half the price. Smartphones from Xiaomi have proved so popular they sell out in minutes after going on sale online. [Li Pei, Office Worker]: “It's functionality's pretty good, and the price is great for what you get. As for the Apple iPhone, I think that's all about going for the brand. I'm not into going for the brand. First of all, Xiaomi is Chinese, and I think that everyone should support local-made products. Plus, it's a great product.” The company, founded by CEO Lei Jun, said last month its first-half revenue was close to $1 billion as it sold more than 3 million phones. Over 1000 people flocked to the Beijing launch of the MI2, where fans and potential buyers were invited to give the new smartphone a test drive.
