Gu Kailai Trial Ends in China

The trial of Gu Kailai was held today, in Hefei city in Anhui province. It ended after 7 hours. The verdict will be delivered at an unspecified later date. Gu and her aide Zhang Xiaojun were charged with homicide for the death of British businessman Neil Heywood. State-run media reported that Gu did not deny the charges.The courtroom held about 150 people. Foreign journalists were barred, and only state-run media allowed to attend. The family of Neil Heywood was not there. According to the trial, Gu met with Heywood last November in Chongqing. After Heywood had consumed too much alcohol, she poisoned him. Gu's state-appointed defense lawyer says that Gu was trying to protect her son. The lawyer also said that Heywood bore “a certain responsibility” for his death. The meaning of that was unclear. Gu and Zhang could face the death penalty if they are found guilty. Analysts say the outcome of the trial has already been determined. After charges were filed last month, state-run Xinhua News Agency wrote: “The facts of the two defendants' crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial.” The information that Gu believed her son was in danger could indicate that she will receive a more lenient sentence.
