On Sunday, a boat of Hong Kong citizens called the Action Committee for Defending the Diaoyu Islands set sail from Hong Kong. Their mission: to assert Chinese ownership over the Diaoyu Islands. But there's one problem. Japan also claims ownership of the islands, which they call the Senkaku Islands. The uninhabited islands are located 115 miles northeast of Taiwan. In 2010 a Chinese fishing boat rammed into two Japanese patrol boats near the islands. The fishermen were arrested, and anti-Japanese protests erupted all over China. Chinese tour groups in Japan were called back, and China cut off rare earth metals exports to Japan. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao declined to meet with former Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan to discuss the issue. Since then, official talks have not been reinstated. Japan's claim to the islands is based on the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1952, which gave Japan legal ownership of the islands after the second world war. Neither Taiwan nor China were present at the treaty and dispute the legitimacy of the western-backed agreement. China bases its claim based on a three hundred year old map made by a Chinese diplomat, Xu Baoguang.
