US rapper Will.i.am premieres a new song from the surface of Mars, beaming it back to Earth. Full Story: US rapper Will.i.am debuted his latest song, “Reaching for the Stars,” from the surface of Mars on Tuesday, using the Mars rover Curiosity to beam the song back to Earth. It is the first song to ever debut from another planet. Will.i.am unveiled the song during a news conference at a NASA laboratory in Pasadena, California. He told the audience, which included a number of young students, that the song was meant to transcend time and cultures. [Will.i.am, US Rapper]: “I wanted to show human collaboration and have an orchestra there and something that would be timeless where it is, you know, and translated in different cultures, not have like a hip hop beat or a dance beat.” The song played for both the news conference and NASA employees. Flight director Bobak Ferdowsi, popularly known for his 'Mohawk' haircut, began playback of the song from his computer. He and his colleagues then spent the next several minutes dancing and clapping to the tune. Will.i.am said one the main purposes of the song was to encourage children to study science.
