China claims to carry out ten thousand human organ transplants each year. But unlike the US and Europe, China has no national organ donation system. That's been the subject of a lot of scrutiny: Where do the organs come from? Well last month China's Ministry of Health announced a new program. It's called “Management for the Acquisition and Allocation of Organs.” Supposedly, it's meant to set up a national distribution system for organs. But there's more to this than meets the eye—including numbers that don't add up, and behind it all, deeply hidden political maneuvering.
