Dozens of artists in India's eastern Bihar state are painting roadside trees and their leaves with colourful stories from Hindu epics, hoping to save the region's already critically sparse greenery. Call it a new tactic for those trying to protect the environment. Artists in the Bihar state of eastern India are painting trees with depictions of Hindu stories in an attempt to protect the region's greenery. The campaign began in Madhubani, a district in northern Bihar known for its cultural awareness. It resulted in hundreds of untended roadside trees being covered in colorful, elaborate artwork. Now, trees and their leaves show scenes from classics including the Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with other simpler messages. The hope is that the artwork will deter deeply-religious locals from cutting down the trees, out of fear from incurring the wrath of the deities. There were doubts about the sustainability of the project, and there were initial objections and concerns in the beginning. However, having started in September, the project is still going on strong, especially after having attracted international attention. According to state records, the forest coverage in the state is under seven percent. The government is also looking to help out; it plans to plant 250 million saplings over the next five years.
