A fragment of the skull of Apostle Matthew is placed on display in a Greek-Orthodox church in Cairo, during celebrations of the Church's 80th anniversary. Full Story: A fragment of the skull of Saint Matthew was placed on display in a Greek-Orthodox church in Cairo on Thursday. It marks the first time in recent memory that the skull fragment from one of the twelve apostles has been displayed. Saint Matthew was also one of the four Evangelists, the authors of the four Gospel accounts in the new testament. The fragment, which members claim is from the author of the first Gospel, would be one of the many pieces of his remains, scattered around the world. It is believed that his body rests in Italy. Theodoros II, the church's patriarch, led a two-hour service at the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria. He said that Saint Matthew was killed in Ethiopia by “non-believers.” [Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria]: “This is a part of the skull belonging to a great Evangelist. These fragments of the saint are considered a great blessing to us Orthodox Christians, which is why we place our hands on it as such, kiss it with our lips, light a flame, and take our blessings from it.” The Church in Cairo was founded in 1931 and celebrations for its anniversary are to continue for five days.
