A very strong and shallow earthquake M 6.6 struck Taiwan at 12:02 UTC on October 31, 2013. USGS measured depth at 9.3 km (5.8 miles), EMSC at 10 km. CWA Taiwan is reporting a magnitude of 6.3 at a depth of 20 km, still very dangerous but less dangerous than the USGS values.
Epicenter was located 45 km (28 miles) SSW of Hualian and 63 km (39 miles) ESE of Lugu, Taiwan.
No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data, but this does not include Taiwan's coast where local tsunami is possible. Current impact estimate for maximum tsunami wave height is 0.3 m in Hsin-ch'eng, Taiwan.
