ISA Press Release: Israeli Citizen Linked to Islamic State Arrested and
Charged
(Communicated by the ISA)
The following has been cleared for publication
The ISA, in cooperation with the Israel Police, on 29 January 2017, arrested
Anas Haj Yehiye, 35, an Israeli citizen and resident of Taibe, on suspicion
of activity on behalf of – and links to – Islamic State. He was arrested in
the wake of intelligence information that indicated he was working to
advance terrorist activities within the State of Israel.
In his ISA investigation it was learned that Haj Yehiye had been in contact
with Islamic State operatives and had disseminated both extremist material
and knowledge regarding the production of explosives. He swore allegiance to
Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and had considered going to Syria
in order to join in the fighting alongside terrorist operatives. The
investigation revealed that Haj Yehiye had planned to form an Islamic State
cell in order to commit acts of terrorism in Israel and, to this end, had
attempted to recruit others.
Haj Yehiye was asked to carry out an attack on a bus in Tel Aviv and against
IDF soldiers but the plans were never realized.
It was also learned that Haj Yehiye had been a member of an online group in
which other Islamic State operatives also participated. He distributed,
among the operatives, material on the production and construction of
explosive belts and IEDs connected to cellphones, and training videos on
including poisons in explosive devices. He also distributed instructions on
the preparation of highly lethal substances, including sarin gas.
Seized at his home were photographs of military materials and IEDs as well
as the Islamic State’s ‘Detailed Guide for the Jihadist’.
The State Attorney’s Office (Central District), today (Monday, 20 February
2017), filed an indictment against Haj Yehiye in the Central District Court.
The ISA views Islamic State supporters in Israel as a severe security
threat, and will use all counter-terrorist and preventive means at its
disposal and will with those involved to the fullest extent of the law.
