What lane will autonomous cars drive in? Will they be able to speed? Will they hang in the left lane? Will cars get smaller and lighter because they won’t need as much crash protection? In the instance of crashes or speeding tickets, will driver liability be waived because “The car did it.”? Is the romance of Americans and the car over? (Dan Neil thinks so).
These are among several questions and issues that were discussed on ROAD TESTAMENT with Matt Farah, Mike Spinelli and Dan Neil. As we know, Dan Neil knows a lot more than we do, so he was able to weigh in on the technology, social issues, and the politics that will be available with self-driving cars. This is a discussion everyone should watch, because “robot chauffeurs”will happen in our lifetime, and likely within 10 years. Every car company has radar cruise control, some can keep you in the lane with your hands off the wheel, or stop when a person jumps in front of the car.
This is a monumental moment in automobiles, independence, safety, and personal freedom. Will we eventually all be driven around, or will we have the option to keep our old cars, or drive ourselves? You might think this sounds too Big Brother conspiracy, but if it’s safer for everyone, couldn’t that be mandated? The future is arriving, and some of the smartest and most entertaining journalists in the automotive game talk about it.
