Ever seen the footage of the Lamborghini on fire as it raced up a hill ?
If you haven’t seen the footage then here is the link to the piece of footage in question.
The car in that video was the Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradaleof Tasmanian’s Jason and John White, they went on to win the event with the car still on fire.
The event they were racing in was the Targa High Country Tarmac Rally
It is made up of 16 different timed tarmac stages, with over 200km (124miles) of competitive distance covered on closed public roads , it is held over 2.5 days in the High Country region of Victoria, Australia.
Targa High Country is just one of 4 rounds of the Australian Tarmac Championship.
The major event being the week long Targa Tasmania Rally, a very similar event to Targa Newfoundland
The 2012 running of Targa High Country was run over this past weekend.
This year the White’s luck was not as good as last year.
After finishing the first leg with a 15sec lead to the next car, they started leg 2 in a good position to defend their win but on the second stage of the day they retired from the event after they blew the front differential in their $600,000 Lamborghini race car.
Video of the diff letting go is below
This left the event win open for two drivers to battle for.
They were Qldander Tony Quinn and his navigator Naomi Tillett in their 2011 Nissan GTR and Victorian Couple Matt & Casey Close in their 2010 Audi TT RS.
After some fastest stage times on Leg 1 by Close, it was all Quinn on Day 2, as he went on to win every one of the days 8 stages and finished 1st by over 56secs. Third home was ex Touring Car Legend Jim Richards. Richards is a 7 times Bathurst Winner, 8 times Targa Tasmania winner and 4 time Touring car champion.
This was Quinn’s first Targa event win since winning Targa Tasmania in 2010.
The next round of the championship is round 3 Targa Wrest Point held around the town of Hobart in Tasmania at the end of January 2013.
To see more action from the event check out each days highlights below
As little bit of a side note here a little bit more of interesting footage from the event.
To make sure the stages are clear before the cars attempt their timed runs, a sweep car (or 0 car as it is called) does the last run over the stage to make sure they are clear.
This year for Targa High Country the Sweep car was an Australian Holden V8 Ute driven by QLDer Ben Wooster. Looks like Ben had fun clearing the stages as you can see from the footage below
