French automaker Renault’s lucky charm the Duster is the one vehicle that not only brought profits to it, but it also brought the culture of compact SUVs in the country. There were some compact SUVs in past but they all failed, and it is the Renault Duster, which tasted the success in this very segment. Launched back in July 2012, the Duster today is amongst the top-selling SUVs in the country, and its success story attracted a number automakers to try their luck in the newly formed segment. Mahindra has already brought its first compact SUV, the Mahindra Quanto in October, which also getting a good response.
Next in the line is the Ford EcoSport, which is considered to be the mighty rival to the ‘Romanian Dracula’-the Duster. But it won’t be easy for Ford to get such success, as the Duster has already built its fan following. In addition, Ford is planning to launch the EcoSport by first quarter of 2013, and there are reports that Renault would launch the 4×4 version of the vehicle at almost same time. As per the word on the street, Renault Duster four-wheel drive (4WD) option will be launched by March 2013, and to be possibly priced a lakh higher than the existing petrol and 110PS diesel versions. The reports further indicate that the company is already manufacturing 4WD Duster at its Chennai based plant, which is being exported to the UK market. So, we are expecting that the company will launch the similar vehicle in India.
