Your only option for a lightweight, rear-drive roadster was to buy something old and British, and therefore requiring an electrical engineering degree, or something old and Italian, and therefore requiring a giant checkbook, a best friend named Tony, and the patience of Mother Theresa.
The Miata changed all that; no longer did you have to sacrifice reliability in the face of motoring enjoyment, which is why the Miata (now MX-5) has gone on to become the world’s best-selling sports car. Matt gets a spin in a very clean and mostly original 1990 ‘NA’ Miata on the famous Angeles Crest Highway.
