When I was a small business owner, I had one employee who was a “problem.” I fired him for a number of reasons, including theft. I learned the hard way that firing, without engaging in employee “reviews,” is considered racism. We didn’t do “reviews.” We didn’t have to, then. In my small business, we talked about performance when necessary, had office sit-downs for both praise and problems. Paychecks grew when appropriate. I was told it was fruitless, a waste of time and money, to fight the thief receiving unemployment benefits. I was also told when employers called for an employment recommendation for this man, my answer should be, “I’m sorry. I do not comment on previous employees.” Is this what happened with Vester Lee Flanagan (aka Bryce Williams), the murderer of Alison Parker and Adam Ward, a journalist and photographer for WDBJ in Virginia?
Flanagan was fired and police escorted him out of the WDBJ office. That was two years ago. Did WDBJ receive requests for recommendations of employment? How did they answer that call, or calls? Flanagan had a troubled background, including after he left WDBJ. How many employers handed him off without damaging his reputation, because they feared a lawsuit? Just asking.
