A Republic is defined as: A state or nation in which the supreme power rests in the body of all citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives elected, directly or indirectly, by them and therefore responsible to them.
The Founding Fathers such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were concerned that the exuberance over the establishment of the United States solidified by the Constitution and Bill of Rights would diminish over time. We are about 237 years past the signing of the Declaration of Independence now and the creation of a new Republic, so how are we doing?
After the Constitutional Convention in September of 1787, a very concerned Woman asked Benjamin Franklin an important question. “Mr. Franklin, what kind of government have you given us?”. This was a very straight forward to the point question but notice Benjamin Franklin’s quick and just as to the point response “A Republic, madam… if you can keep it.”.
Let Benjamin Franklins response sink in for a moment and then answer this question…have we kept it. Have we kept the Republic that our Founding Fathers and Patriots of those days worked so hard to give us?
In addition, ask yourself these questions: Would our Founding Fathers approve of the condition our country is in today? Would they even recognize it as a Republic? Would they support the government we have today or would they rebel against it?
What would Mr. Franklin say about the state of the republic, the Constitution and the state of freedom and liberty in the USA today? Would he and the other Founding Fathers even call this the USA?
So, have we kept the Republic or forfeited it over to a big federal government?
