Urban Birding Presents: A Bird in the Hand

KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) – It's been a long winter in Nova Scotia and with the proliferation of snow and ice, many of us have been forced indoors out of lack of mobility. 

If you can make the trip down to Point Pleasant Park in Halifax (accessible on the 9 Barrington bus), there's a certain joy around this time of year in holding out a still hand full of birdseed and seeing what lands on your feeding station. The birds most interested in you will mostly likely be the black-capped chickadees, who are often brave enough to spend enough time on your hand to pick out their seeds of choice, which seem inevitably to be black oil sunflower seeds. On our most recent trip, we had one plump blue jay landing, although the bird seemed to promptly understand the awkward weight he presented and flew away without taking a seed.
