White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest Monday repeatedly asserted that the Obamas threw their 500-person White House bash Saturday “on their own dime,” but it remained whether a sizable tab was nevertheless picked up by taxpayers.
Earnest’s assertion would appear to suggest that the Obamas paid for the food and the alcohol. But Earnest was unable to say whether the event was catered or whether service, food preparation, and the massive cleanup was provided by White House staff.
Certainly, at least, the Secret Service had to work to clear people into the building and provide security for the event.
Earnest justified the extreme secrecy of the event by saying the Obamas had thrown a private affair at “their house” and “their own home.”
Actually, it’s not their home. As the Obamas themselves like to say, when they’re not throwing parties, it is “the people’s house,” lent out to them for a period of time. And the people have a right to know something about what’s going on within it when 500 Obama “friends” are invited to a party thrown for no particular reason, unless there are reasons we’re not aware of.
