Good morning! In the news today: Obama uses the Charleston murders to scold Americans that they need to change their thinking about guns; Roof confesses, says he wanted to start a race war; sexual harassment complaints soar at State under Hillary, Kerry; weekend golf extravaganza for Obama on tap; Obama’s failure to enforce red line brought reality home to Israel; and Matt Lauer puts Brian Williams on the couch.

Have a great weekend.

Obama uses killings to scold on guns . . . President Obama Thursday appeared at the White House to mourn the killing of nine African Americans in South Carolina in a apparently racially motivated mass murder, using the tragedy to call for Americans to change the way they think about guns. White House Dossier

Jindal: Obama remarks “shameful” . . . “I think it was completely shameful, that within 24 hours of this awful tragedy, nine people killed at a bible study at a church,” Jindal continued. “We have the president trying to score cheap political points. Let him have this debate next week. His job as commander in chief is to help the country begin the healing process.” Breitbart

Roof Confesses . . . Dylann Roof admits he did it, two law enforcement officials said — shooting and killing nine people he’d sat with for Bible study at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina. But why? To start a race war, Roof told investigators, according to one of the officials.  CNN

Well, if the right people get their way, he may yet succeed.

Roof: A loner drawn to white supremacy . . . His uncle worried he was cooped up in his room too much. The few images of him found easily online suggest he had a fascination with white supremacy, publicly embracing its symbols. And for his birthday this year, his father bought the young man a pistol, the uncle said. Reuters

He is charged Friday morning with nine counts of murder.

Florists’ tips led to arrest . . . Debbie Dills was running behind Thursday on her way into work at Frady’s Florist in Kings Mountain. It was God’s way of putting her in the right place at the right time, the Gastonia woman said. Dills and her boss, Todd Frady, made the initial calls around 10:35 a.m. that led to the arrest of suspected Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof in Shelby, North Carolina. Shelby Star

Remembering the victims . . . All her life, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton pressed toward a goal. On a New Jersey high school track, she chased the finish so well that she sprinted her way to an athletic scholarship to South Carolina State University. As a speech pathologist, she pursued higher academic degrees to better help those who came to her wanting to be heard. But few things motivated the 45-year-old mother of three more than answering the upper calling to spread the gospel. Washington Post

Sexual Harassment at State soars under Kerry, Clinton . . . In a disclosure that could have political implications for election campaigns, the State Department’s chief watchdog reported Thursday that worker harassment complaints have nearly tripled inside the department during the tenures of Hillary Rodham Clinton and John F. Kerry — but the department still doesn’t have mandatory training for all employees. Washington Times

USDA takes school meals off campus . . . The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the expansion of its summer meal programs beyond the $500 million of taxpayer dollars used to pay for last year’s effort, with a goal of serving an unprecedented 200 million meals to “children” 18 or younger, not only on school campuses, but at other sites, including at home. CNS News

The Left knows that a new welfare program can always start small and then metastasize.

Weekend golf extravaganza on tap for Obama . . . President Obama continues to cast a pall of unseriousness over his presidency, which was already of questionable seriousness, planning a weekend of golf out in California following two days of fundraising on the Left Coast. This just a week after throwing a White House bash for 500 of his closest friends. White House Dossier

Report: Michelle’s Europe trip to cost over $600K . . . Mrs. Obama, accompanied by her daughters and her mother, is promoting the vital issues of girls learning and healthy eating in . . . England and Italy. She is also hanging out with Prince Harry and taking in sights like Da Vinci’s Last Supper painting. White House Dossier

When Israel realized it was on its own . . . By the summer of 2013, President Obama had convinced several key Israelis that he wasn’t bluffing about using force against the Iranian nuclear program. Then he failed to enforce his red line against Syrian dictator Bashar Assad—and the Israelis realized they’d been snookered. Michael Oren, the former Israeli ambassador to the United States, recalls the shock inside his government. “Everyone went quiet,” he said in a recent interview. “An eerie quiet. Everyone understood that that was not an option, that we’re on our own.” Washington Free Beacon

Obama’s failure to follow through was likely noted all over the world, by allies and enemies alike. It was a pivotal moment, one that revealed, or rather confirmed, Obama’s weakness as a leader.

Haass: Obama Iran deal raises chance of nuclear Mideast . . . “The danger is that we will get an agreement that . . . after ten or fifteen years will allow Iran tremendous freedom to rebuild its nuclear capacity essentially unfettered,” said Council on Foreign Relations President Richard Haass. “And the administration is setting up a Middle East where I actually thing the chance that – not just Iran, but several of its neighbors will have some sort of nuclear program – is going up.” White House Dossier

Email confirms Libya was to be Hillary’s big achievement . . . The problem with Hillary’s “successful strategy” is that she had no plan for what would follow after Qaddafi’s overthrow. She may have had a wish, but a wish unaccompanied by the ability to influence events on the ground is not a plan. Powerline

Even Hillary’s music playlist is contrived . . . Rolling Stone music critic Alan Light thinks maybe politics has influenced Hillary’s professed tastes in music: “It’s really kind of lame what she put up as a campaign playlist. I look at this list, and it doesn’t feel real, it doesn’t feel like anything that Hillary Clinton actually listens to . . . All this shows me is, “I like things that are popular, and I don’t want to like anything that would remind you that I’m old.” White House Dossier

Sanders surge becoming problem for Hillary . . . The Vermont Independent has drawn huge crowds of supporters in Iowa and New Hampshire, and pulled within striking distance of Clinton in some Granite State polls. “This is not a protest campaign,” Sanders declared at a breakfast with reporters in Washington last week. “This is a campaign to win.” The Hill

Democrats moving even further to the Left . . . Democrats have shifted increasingly more liberal over the past 15 years, a Gallup poll released Thursday finds. The poll finds that 47 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents identify as both socially liberal and economically moderate or liberal, an eight-point increase from 2008 and 17-point increase since 2001. Washington Examiner

Trump offered actors $50 to cheer his announcement . . . A casting call was sent out last week “looking to cast people for the event to wear t-shirts and carry signs and help cheer him in support of his announcement.” Hollywood Reporter

Meantime, Trump is actually still not a candidate, because he hasn’t filed with the FEC.

Operation replace Jeb Bush . . . John Kasich is on a last-ditch mission to prove he can be the Republican establishment’s dream candidate in 2016. Politico

Pope’s message roils the political world . . . Pope Francis’ stunning encyclical calling for a massive upheaval of the world economy to combat global warming provided fuel for President Obama and climate change activists but posed a tougher challenge for Catholic politicians who were left to grapple with the pontiff’s stern call to arms. Republicans — Catholics and non-Catholics alike — said the pope had overstepped himself with his 184-page missive delving deeply into environmental science and 21st century economics, including saying the use of fossil fuels is turning Earth into a “pile of filth.” Washington Times

House approves fast track . . . The House on Thursday took the first step toward resuscitating the White House’s trade agenda by passing legislation granting President Obama fast-track authority. The bill now goes to the Senate, where the White House and GOP leaders are seeking to strike a deal with pro-trade Democrats. The House vote was 218-208, with 28 Democrats voting for it. The Hill

Congressman: Drudge killed the trade bill . . . Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger this week blamed the Drudge Report and other conservative websites for distorting information about trade legislation, including Trade Promotion Authority, Trade Adjustment Assistance and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the massive trade deal that has yet to be finalized. Politico

Gosh, that free speech thing is such a nuisance!

Williams: Ego made me do it . . . I am sorry,” a subdued Brian Williams told Today’s Matt Lauer in interviews carried out over two days this week. “I am sorry. for what happened. I am different as a result and I expect to be held to a different standard.” USA Today
