The Pentagon has released a book of instructions on the “law of war,” detailing acceptable ways of killing the enemy. The manual also states that journalists can be labeled “unprivileged belligerents,” an obscure term that replaced “enemy combatant.”
A “belligerent” journalist,by the way, could be anyone they disagree with or who they see as working against their interests in the conflict. According to a Georgetown journalism professor, this “gives [the US] license to attack or even murder journalists that they don’t particularly like”. It would, in the US’s eyes, essentially excuse the murder of journalists who work for WikiLeaks. It would excuse the bombing of RT in a time of
war with Russia.
And if you think that sounds extreme, don’t forget that NATO – very much and admittedly on purpose – bombed a TV station killing 16 journalists in Serbia in 1999, for that very reason.
