This man used to be my Congressman, and about the best I can say for Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) 17% is that he’s not the absolute worst Democratic politician in Maryland. I don’t even really despise him; I’m just kind of contemptuous of the way that Cummings has done precisely zero beyond get himself nicely situated in the machine. It was a happy day when that racist redistricting plan the Maryland legislature shoved through shoved me into some other Democrat’s bailiwick; it meant that I could stop caring about Elijah Cummings directly, as it were.
But then there’s this:
A veteran Senate campaign fundraiser is now working for Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), a potential sign that he will run for higher office.
Ashley Martens, who worked for Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) and Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) in past campaigns, is now doing fundraising for Cummings. She is organizing a fundraiser next month at a Nationals-Orioles game in Washington, D.C., asking for $1,000 to $5,000 contributions to Cummings’s political action committee.
(H/T: The Hill) As the Washington Post goes on to note, Cummings doesn’t do much fundraising (as the proud owner of a D+23 district, he usually doesn’t have to), so this news can be justifiably seen as… interesting. Not promising and certainly not definite; but there is an open-seat Senate race in Maryland next year, and so far Democrats in Maryland are showing no signs of being willing to simply let one of their number have the Democratic nomination. I can see how there could be a lot of fun in a three-way nomination brawl…
