Will US Grasp Putin’s Syria Lifeline?

By Robert Parry

Russian President Vladimir Putin has thrown U.S. policymakers what amounts to a lifeline to pull them out of the quicksand that is the Syrian war, but Official Washington’s neocons and the mainstream U.S. news media are growling about Putin’s audacity and challenging his motives.

For instance, The New York Times’ lead editorial on Monday accused Putin of “dangerously building up Russia’s military presence” in Syria, even though Putin’s stated goal is to help crush the Sunni jihadists in the Islamic State and other extremist movements.

Instead, the Times harrumphs about Putin using his upcoming speech to the United Nations General Assembly “to make the case for an international coalition against the Islamic State, apparently ignoring the one already being led by the United States.”

The Times then reprises the bizarre neocon argument that the best way to solve the threat from the Islamic State, Al Qaeda and other jihadist forces is to eliminate Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his military who have been the principal obstacles to an outright victory by the Sunni terrorist groups.

The dreamy Times/neocon prescription continues to be that “regime change” in Damascus would finally lead to the emergence of the mythical “moderate” rebels who would somehow prevail over the far more numerous and far better armed extremists. This perspective ignores the fact that after a $500 million training project for these “moderates,” the U.S. military says four or five fighters are now on the battlefield inside Syria. In other words, the members of this U.S.-trained brigade can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

But rather than rethink Official Washington’s goofy “group think” on Syria – or provide readers a fuller history of the Syrian conflict – the Times moves on to blame Putin for the mess.

“No one should be fooled about Russia’s culpability in Syria’s agony,” the Times writes.

“Mr. Putin could have helped prevent the fighting that has killed more than 250,000 Syrians and displaced millions more, had he worked with other major powers in 2011 to keep Mr. Assad from waging war on his people following peaceful antigovernment protests. … Mr. Assad would probably be gone without the weapons aid and other assistance from Russia and Iran.”

This “group think” ignores the early role of Sunni extremists in killing police and soldiers and thus provoking the harsh retaliation that followed. But the Syrian narrative, according to The New York Times, is that the “white-hat” protesters were simply set upon by the “black-hat” government.

The Times’ simplistic storyline fits neatly with what the influential neoconservatives want the West to believe, since the neocons have had Syria on their “regime change” list, alongside Iraq and Iran, since the list was compiled as part of Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu’s 1996 political campaign. The Times’ narrative also leaves out the crucial role of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other U.S. “allies” in supporting Al Qaeda and its Islamic State spinoff.

……………Kerry’s apparent willingness to work with the Russians – a position that I’m told Obama shares – is at least a sign that some sanity exists inside the State Department, which initially mounted an absurd and futile attempt to organize an aerial blockade to prevent Russia from flying in any assistance to Syria.

If successful, that scheme, emanating from Nuland’s European division, could have collapsed the Syrian regime and opened the gates of Damascus to the Islamic State and/or Al Qaeda. So obsessed are the neocons to achieve their long-held goal of “regime change” in Syria that they would run the risk of turning Syria over to the Islamic State head-choppers and Al Qaeda’s terrorism plotters.

However, after the requisite snorting and pawing of hooves, it appears that the cooler heads in the Obama administration may have finally asserted themselves – and perhaps at The New York Times as well.

Syria in Last 24 Hours: Army Kills Tens of Terrorists in Aleppo Countryside

The Syrian army pounded the positions of the Takfiri terrorists in the countryside of Aleppo, killing tens of militants and injuring dozens more over the past 24 hours.

At least 50 ISIL terrorists were killed in the army’s counter-attacks in different parts of Aleppo countryside.

The vehicles and military equipment of the ISIL terrorists were also destroyed during the Syrian troops’ raids on the militants’ hideouts in Aleppo.

Also in the past 24 hours, a cease-fire agreement covering the Syrian border town of Zabadani and two villages in the Northern province of Idlib between Hezbollah and the Syrian army on one side and terrorist groups on the other, was extended until reaching an agreement.

Al-Manar TV channel said on Tuesday that the truce would continue until a final agreement was reached on the status of militants and civilians in Kefraya and Foua towns.

It is the third cease-fire to cover these areas in around a month.

The cease-fire, which went into effect at mid-Sunday covers also the villages of Madaya and Baqin, which are adjacent to Zabadani.

Meantime, the Syrian army troops targeted concentration centers of the Takfiri militants in the Southern province of Quneitra on Tuesday, killing a large group of them.

The army, backed by the popular defense groups, destroyed a number of terrorists’ vehicles in military operations on Monday night and Tuesday morning in the countryside of Quneitra.

Two armored vehicles belonging to terrorists of al-Nusra Front were destroyed and a number of the Takfiri militants were killed in the villages of al-Hamidyia, Abu Shabta and Jibat al-Khashab.

The army, backed by the popular defense groups, destroyed four of the terrorists’ machinegun-equipped vehicles, and killed all terrorists onboard on the road linking al-Hurriya and al-Hamidyia in the Northwestern countryside of Quneitra.

The Syrian forces also destroyed armored vehicles belonging to al-Nusra terrorists in a military operation against one of their positions in al-Hamidyia, 7 km to the North of Quneitra City.

Elsewhere, the Syrian government forces targeted positions of the foreign-backed Takfiri militants in the coastal province of Lattakia, leaving 20 terrorists, including 15 Chechens, dead.

The army targeted militants’ positions in al-Rawda village in the Northern countryside of Lattakia, killing 20 terrorists, including 15 Chechens.

Meantime, Syrian airstrikes targeted positions of the ISIL Takfiri militants in the Central province of Homs, killing 38 terrorists.

Syrian warplanes bombed ISIL positions in the ancient city of Palmyra, located 215 kilometers (133 miles) Northeast of the capital, Damascus, and two other towns late on Monday, according to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Palmyra, is on the list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s World Heritage Sites.

EXCLUSIVE: ISIL Comes Under Iraqi Forces’ Tight Siege in Fallujah

The latest reports from Fallujah in Anbar province on Wednesday said the ISIL Takfiri terrorists have come under a tight siege by the Iraqi army and the popular forces.

FNA dispatches said the Iraqi army and popular troops made new gains in areas around Fallujah and managed to complete the siege of the city.

The local sources said that the Iraqi forces are preparing to enter Fallujah.

Last week, the popular forces made new gains in the vicinity of Fallujah by seizing back the strategic village of al-Tafaheh.

Last month, the Iraqi Hezbollah forces raided the ISIL’s positions in al-Hayakel region in the Southeastern parts of Fallujah.

Also, the Iraqi popular forces backed by the army managed to purge different parts of Anbar province of Takfiri terrorists over past several months.

According to local sources, Iraqi army troops have destroyed a vital supply tunnel of the ISIL Takfiri militants in the Southern flank of Fallujah in recent days.

“The Iraqi ground force, in coordination with the country’s air force, targeted and destroyed a supplying tunnel of the ISIL starting from the industrial area South of Fallujah and ending in the outskirts of al-Hayakel area,” the sources said.

Scores of Wanted Militants Surrender in Syria

Some 55 wanted terrorists gave up fight and surrendered to the Syrian authorities on Wednesday.

The wanted people are from Damascus and its countryside, Homs, Hama and Idlib, reports said.

On Tuesday, 33 wanted militants from Damascus and its countryside also surrendered to the authorities.

Hundreds of gunmen have been laying down their weapons and turning themselves in to authorities in areas across the country.

This number seems to be on the rise as the army has been making steady gains in the battlefield against the terrorist groups, recapturing an increasing number of regions, including strategic sites, which helped cut off many of the militants’ supply routes and forced them to surrender or run away.
