UN chief: Catalonia cannot claim right to self-determination – YouTube
The UN chief has joined the chorus of Spanish leaders opposing the secession of Catalonia from mainland Spain.
Ban
Ki-moon says the United Nations doesn’t view Spain’s separatist-ruled
region as having the right to self-determination. In an interview
published by mainstream Spanish newspapers, Ban said that Catalonia is
part of an independent and sovereign country. The pro-independence
parties in the wealthy northeastern Spanish region are seeking to pass a
resolution in the Catalan parliament in early November. The proposed
resolution will be the formal start of Catalonia’s secession from Spain.
Catalan groups have already agreed on a document that states the future
state will be a republic. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano
Rajoy has called on opposition leaders to discuss the issue in order to
maintain stability in the run-up to general elections in December.
