Trump: Carson is Still “Pathological”
GOP front-runner Donald Trump Sunday went after his nearest rival, Ben Carson, saying Carson’s self-described “pathological” behavior must still be part of his psychological makeup.
“I guess a book was written, I don’t know where this all came from, but a book was written before he ran for politics, but he said he has pathological disease in the book,” Trump said during an appearance on “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.” He added: “When you have pathological disease, that’s a very serious problem because that’s not something that’s cured. That’s something that you have to live with, and that’s a very serious thing to have to live with.”
In his book “Gifted Hands,” Carson writes that he had a “pathological temper” and exhibited “pathological anger.”
Trump’s comments, which suggest Carson continues to be burdened with a serious psychological problem, appeared designed to plant questions about Carson’s fitness for office.
Trump on Sunday showed off the “energy” he possesses — and which he says opponents like Carson and Jeb Bush lack — by appearing on several Sunday morning shows after staying up late hosting “Saturday Night Live.” With Carson trailing him by just a point or so in the RealClearPolitics average of GOP nomination race polls, Trump zeroed in on a variety of chinks he sees in Carson’s armor.
On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Trump questioned the veracity of Carson’s story that he tried to killed someone with a knife during his youth, only to be saved from becoming a murderer by a belt buckle.
“Belt buckles really pretty much don’t stop stabbing,” Trump said. “They turn, they twist, things slide off them — pretty lucky if that happened.”
He suggested on “This Week” that the incident and others made Carson seem “strange.”
“It’s a strange situation though when you talk about hitting your mother in the head with a hammer and hitting your friend in the face with a lock, with a padlock, and when you talk about stabbing somebody, but the knife saved him, when you know the — belt buckle saved him,” Trump said. “I mean, it’s a weird deal going on and I hope it all works out, because I don’t want to see Ben have problems over this stuff. And, you know, it’s a very strange situation.”
Trump noted, “I can say that I never tried to hit my mother in any way, shape or form.”On CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Trump questioned Carson’s contention that the Pyramids were used to store grain.
“So, you’re talking about storing grain in the pyramids. Well, they have very little space. They have space for small rooms, where the pharaohs had their coffins and where the pharaohs were buried, essentially,” Trump said.
Carson, who appeared separately on “This Week,” said he was the victim of a “hit job” in a piece by Politico on Carson and West Point.
And in an interview aired on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Carson said the media were after him because “I’m a threat, to the progressives, to the secular progressive movement in this country … I’m the candidate who’s most likely to beat Hillary Clinton.”
Trump also said on CNN that Lee Atwater, the 1988 campaign presidential manager for George H.W. Bush, floated the idea that Trump could run as Bush’s VP nominee.
“I was asked that question by Lee,” Trump said. “He said, ‘What do you think about that idea?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, Lee, you can check it out if you want but it doesn’t sound right,’ because at that time I had no political aspiration.”
