Kuwait to send ground troops to protect Saudi Arabia from Houthi incursions – report « Aletho News

RT | December 29, 2015

Kuwait, which is formally part of the Saudi-led coalition conducting a military crackdown in Yemen, is to send an artillery battalion to protect southern regions of its Gulf neighbor from cross-border attacks, according to a report.

“Kuwait decided on the participation of its ground forces, represented by an artillery battalion, in operations to strike at positions of Houthi aggression against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the Kuwaiti daily Al-Qabas reported Tuesday, citing an informed source.

Saudi Arabia has provided the bulk of the fighting forces for the Yemen campaign, with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain also playing significant parts. Other members of the coalition were hesitant in providing ground troops.

Riyadh went to war in Yemen to put back into power ousted President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who fled from the Shiite Houthi rebels after his two-year term expired in January. His predecessor, Ali Abdullah Saleh, who used to be an opponent of the rebels, is now their ally, assisting them with his loyal tribal troops.

Saudi Arabia sees the Houthis as a proxy force of its regional nemesis Iran, something both the rebels and Tehran deny.

The Yemeni campaign has proved to be more difficult than Saudi Arabia expected. Since it started in March, the conflict has claimed the lives of almost 6,000 people, many of them civilians killed by coalition bombings. Human rights groups have accused Riyadh of committing war crimes during the attacks.

The Houthis have staged several attacks on the Saudi regions of Najran and Jazan from their stronghold in northern Yemen. These include a number of ground incursions and several ballistic missile launches in recent months.

Saudi Arabia’s Aramco Oil Company Comes under Yemen’s Ballistic Missile Attack Again

The Yemeni army and popular forces targeted Saudi Arabia’s Aramco Oil Company in the Southern province of Jizan with Qaher-I ballistic missiles for a second time in less than two weeks.

“The (Qaher-I) missile precisely hit Aramco oil company on Monday night,” the Arabic-language media outlets quoted an unnamed Yemeni army official as saying on Tuesday.

He reiterated that the missile attack came in retaliation for the Saudi-led aggressors’ violation of the UN-sponsored ceasefire.

Yet, the source did not give further details about the damage incurred on Aramco Company.

On December 21, the Yemeni forces also hit Aramco Oil Company with Qaher-I ballistic missile

Qaher-I is an updated version of a Russian-made surface-to-surface missile.

The ballistic missiles that have recently come into service in Yemen’s army have claimed a heavy toll from the Saudi side of the war. Only in the last one week, around 550 Saudi-led troops have been killed by these ballistic missiles.

On Sunday, the Yemeni army and popular forces continued pounding Saudi Arabia’s strategic military bases in Najran province with their new upgraded ballistic missiles.

The Yemeni army’s ballistic missiles hit Saudi Arabia’s National Guards Base in the city of Najran in the Southern part of the kingdom.

The Qaher-I missile strike incurred heavy losses on the Saudi troops in Najran province.

Military sources announced on December 22 that the Yemeni army and the popular forces pounded targets in Al-Khuba region in Saudi Arabia’s Southern Jizan province with hundreds of home-made missiles and rockets.

“The Yemeni forces have attacked Al-Khuba region with Over 700 rockets and missiles,” the Arabic-language media outlets quoted an unnamed military source as saying.

On Wednesday, the Yemeni army and popular forces targeted a strategic military base in Saudi Arabia’s Asir province with another Qaher-I ballistic missile on Wednesday.

The missile precisely hit its target in Al-Faisal military base in Khamis Mushait region of Asir province.

On Thursday, the Yemeni army and popular forces launched a fresh round of attacks on the Saudi forces’ positions in the Southwestern province of Lahij.

Brigadier General Sharaf Qaleb Luqman, the spokesman of the Yemeni armed forces, made the announcement in an interview with Yemen’s official news agency, adding that the Yemeni army and popular forces’ Tochka missiles hit a gathering of the Saudi forces at al-Anad military base in Lahij province.
