Reactions are pouring in over Saudi Arabia’s execution of top Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

The US has warned Riyadh that the execution risks escalating sectarian tensions. State Department Spokesman John Kirby urged the Persian Gulf kingdom to respect and protect human rights. He also called on Riyadh to permit peaceful expression of dissent. The European Union has also slammed Riyadh for executing the prominent scholar.
