Authoritarian change is attractive when the set ups, the structures for coordinating power, government, congressional districts, etc and et al are purposely broken and are systems and functions free of any serious desire for change.

We have our happy little zero sum games of  relentless ideologues, cynical manipulators, self interested money and power players, new bums and old princes …. all just jockeying for the power that the systems permit …. checks and balances on each other ….  cynical alliances …. the hopes of freedom from dead brained rabble and antagonistic vultures …… who can win the prize……
