FEELING THE FLOPSWEAT. Reince Priebus Takes A Shot At #NeverTrump

The #NeverTrump movement, whatever it’s success in keeping the Vienna-sausage-sized fingers of Donald Trump off the presidency, has probably reached the critical mass necessary to keep Donald Trump out of the White House. With about a third of the GOP electorate so appalled at the utter lack of dignity, manners, morals, and intelligence of Donald Trump that they are saying they will either not vote for Trump or cast an affirmative vote for Hillary Clinton, RNC chairman, Reince Priebus, is feeling some pressure from down ballot candidates, especially a handful of embattled senators, to try to convince Republican voters to forget about their beliefs and be good little serfs and vote for Trump:
Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus on Friday called for Republicans to unite ahead of the presidential election, striking back against the Never Trump movement.
“It is essential to victory in November that we all support our candidate,” Priebus said at the RNC’s spring meeting in Hollywood, Fla.
“This goes for everyone, whether you’re a county party chairman, an RNC member, or a presidential candidate. Politics is a team sport, and we can’t win unless we rally around whoever becomes our nominee,” he added, drawing applause from the audience.
“They’re trying out for our team. No one is forcing them to wear our jersey. We expect our candidates to support our party and our eventual nominee.”
The comments seemed pointed at the growing movement of conservatives who insist they won’t back Donald Trump if he’s the GOP nominee.
The problem with this is that for conservatives, the GOP has only barely ever been “our team.” Look at the way conservative candidates are treated by the RNC when running for office and by the House and Senate leadership when they are elected. If Donald Trump wins the nomination based on the campaign of soft fascism, rank demagoguery and pixie farts that he has run so far then we conservatives have no one on the ballot worth supporting. It is fair to say that Hillary Clinton is more conservative in a lot of areas than Donald Trump.
I feel sorry for Priebus. This is not a mess he created. Donald Trump is the direct outgrowth of the tradition of lies and deception spun by John Boehner and Mitch McConnell. They are the people who decided to talk about opposing Obama while collaborating with him because they calculated they could raise more money by bitching about what they were surreptitiously doing together than they could by fighting. They are the people who left about 40% of the nation feeling that they have nothing left to lose by burning everything down and taking a chance that what comes next will be better than the Obama-McConnell-Boehner alliance provided. But I’m at the point where I don’t feel sorry enough for Priebus to actually vote to put Donald Trump in the White House.
